The Best Time for a Tanzania Safari
The short answer: June to October is the easiest time for general game viewing, January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti, and the green months bring lower prices, fewer vehicles and the best birding. There is no bad month, only different trips.
The seasons at a glance
Northern Tanzania sits just south of the equator, so the year is shaped by rain rather than by summer and winter. Two rainy seasons frame one long dry season:

Rain, not the calendar, decides what happens each year. A late or early rainy season can shift wildlife movements by several weeks.

The best time for…
- General game viewing: June to October. Grass is short, water is scarce and animals gather at rivers and waterholes, which makes them easier to find.
- The calving season: January to March, with the peak usually in February, on the Ndutu plains of the southern Serengeti ecosystem.
- River crossings: the Mara River in the far north, usually July to October (busiest in August and September). Crossings are never guaranteed on a given day.
- Birding: November to April, when migrant birds arrive from Europe and Asia and many resident species are in breeding colours.
- Lower prices and fewer vehicles: March to May and November. Some lodges lower their rates, and park fees for the Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park are lower from 15 March to 15 May.
- Photography: the green months give dramatic skies, clean air and fresh colours; the dry months give dust, golden light and big concentrations of animals.
Park by park
- Tarangire: at its best in the dry season, when elephants and other animals move to the Tarangire River. Good all year, but noticeably busier with wildlife from June to October.
- Ngorongoro Crater: excellent all year, because most of its animals stay inside the crater walls. Mornings on the rim can be cold, especially from June to August.
- Serengeti: always worth visiting; where you stay should follow the season (south from December to March, centre and west from April to June, north from July to October).
- Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park: good all year and easy as day trips from Arusha.
- Lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai: the dry months are the easiest time for the night climb of the volcano; heavy rain makes the steep ash slopes harder.
