Kilimanjaro Day Hike to Mandara Hut
A day on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro: walk from Marangu Gate up through the rainforest to Mandara Hut, the first hut on the Marangu route, and back down, with a licensed mountain guide. Pickup in Moshi or Arusha.
You do not have to climb to the summit to walk on Kilimanjaro. This day hike follows the first part of the Marangu route, a wide, well-kept path that climbs about 850 metres through thick montane rainforest to Mandara Hut, where climbers spend their first night.
Along the way your mountain guide explains the plants of the forest, and you may see or hear blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus in the trees. After lunch at Mandara, if there is time and the weather allows, you can take a short side walk to the rim of Maundi Crater before walking back down to the gate.

The path climbs steadily through tall rainforest, with ferns, mosses and old trees, and crosses small streams. It is not technical, but it is uphill most of the way and can be muddy after rain.
At Mandara Hut you stop for your packed lunch. If time and the weather allow, your guide can take you on a short walk of about 15 to 20 minutes to the rim of Maundi Crater, a small volcanic crater near the hut.

Questions travellers ask
How hard is the day hike to Mandara Hut?
It is a long but not technical walk: about 8 km up and 8 km back, climbing about 850 metres. Most reasonably fit walkers manage it in 5 to 7 hours of walking. Good shoes help, because the path can be wet and slippery.
Will I see the summit of Kilimanjaro?
Maybe. The forest blocks most views, and the summit is often in cloud. On a clear day you may see Kibo from the area around Mandara Hut or Maundi Crater, but we cannot promise it.
Do I need to be acclimatised?
No. Mandara Hut is at about 2,700 metres, much lower than the altitudes where altitude sickness usually becomes a problem. Walk at a steady pace and drink enough water.
Can I go on to the summit from here?
Not on a day hike. Reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) takes a climb of several days, such as our 7-day Machame or 8-day Lemosho climbs.
Are park fees included?
Yes. The Kilimanjaro National Park fees for the day hike, your licensed mountain guide, transport and lunch are all included in the price.
