Your First Safari in Tanzania

Updated October 2026 · 7 min read · By Lion Crest Expeditions, Arusha

A first safari raises a lot of questions: how long to go for, when, which parks, and what it all costs. This guide answers them in one place, with links to our detailed guides and to trips that work well the first time.

Start here: the short version

  • Length: 3 days is the minimum for the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater; 5 to 8 days is more comfortable.
  • When: June to October is the easiest season; January and February are good too.
  • Where: the northern circuit from Arusha: Tarangire, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.
  • How: a private safari for your own pace, or a group joining safari to share the cost.
  • Before you go: passport, visa, Tanzania's compulsory travel insurance, and advice from your doctor or a travel clinic.

How long should your first safari be?

From Arusha, the Serengeti is a long day's drive away, so very short trips spend much of their time on the road. Three days is the shortest trip that reaches both the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. With five to eight days you can add Tarangire or Lake Manyara, avoid several long drives in a row and spend more than one night in the Serengeti, where most of the big cats are found.

If you have only one free day, a day trip to Tarangire, Lake Manyara or the Ngorongoro Crater still gives you a real first taste of a safari.

When to go

June to October is the main dry season: clear skies, thin vegetation and animals gathering near water make wildlife easier to see, but it is also the busiest and most expensive time. January and February are warm and green, with calving in the southern Serengeti. March to May brings the long rains: fewer visitors and lower prices, with muddy tracks in places. November and December have shorter, lighter rains.

Which parks to choose

Most first safaris follow the northern circuit, which starts in Arusha:

If you are staying on Zanzibar, the southern parks (Mikumi and Nyerere) are closer and can be reached on short trips.

Private or group joining?

On a private safari you have your own vehicle and guide, you choose the dates and the pace, and you can stop as long as you like at a sighting. It suits couples, families and anyone with a special interest such as photography. A group joining safari runs on fixed dates and you share the vehicle with other travellers, which lowers the price. It suits solo travellers and anyone on a tighter budget.

What a safari costs

The price depends mainly on the number of people sharing the vehicle, the season, the parks and the level of accommodation. Park fees are a large part of the cost and are the same for everyone. Every tour page on our site shows the price per person by group size, with what is included and excluded. Read our safari cost guide for example prices and the official park fees.

Getting there and getting around

Most northern-circuit safaris start in Arusha, a short drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Between the parks you travel in a 4x4 safari vehicle with your guide. The Serengeti is about 7 to 7½ hours from Arusha by road, or a little over an hour by small plane; many travellers drive one way and fly the other. See Arusha to the Serengeti: drive or fly?.

What to pack

Pack light, in neutral colours, with warm layers for cold early mornings and evenings, a hat, sun cream and a good camera or binoculars. If you take a small plane, luggage is usually limited to 15 kg per person in a soft bag. Our packing list has the full list.

Before you travel: a short checklist

  • A passport valid for your whole trip, and a visa if your nationality needs one (check the official requirements before you travel).
  • Tanzania's compulsory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors (44 US dollars per person from 1 October 2026); Zanzibar has its own policy.
  • Your own travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
  • Advice from your doctor or a travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention.
  • Some cash in small notes for tips and personal extras.

A day on safari

Days usually start early, because animals are most active in the cool morning. You spend the morning on a game drive, have lunch at your lodge or a picnic in the park, and go out again in the afternoon until the park closes in the evening. Your guide decides where to look based on recent sightings and the season. Some days are spent mostly driving between parks, with game viewing on the way. Wildlife is wild: good guides know where to look, but no sighting can be guaranteed.

Common questions

How many days do I need for a first safari in Tanzania?

Three days is the shortest trip that reaches both the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater from Arusha. Five to eight days is more relaxed: fewer long drives in a row and more time in each park.

What is the best month for a first safari?

June to October, the main dry season, is the easiest time to see a lot of wildlife. January and February are also good, with calving in the southern Serengeti. March to May is the long rainy season: quieter and often cheaper, but some roads get muddy.

Is a private safari better than a group safari?

A private safari gives you your own vehicle and guide and lets you set the pace. A group joining safari costs less because you share the vehicle with other travellers on fixed dates.

Will I see the Big Five?

Lions, elephants and buffalo are seen on most northern-circuit safaris. Leopards are harder to find, and in the north rhinos are usually only seen in the Ngorongoro Crater. Wildlife is wild, so no sighting can be guaranteed.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. Tanzania's compulsory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors costs 44 US dollars per person from 1 October 2026, and Zanzibar has its own policy. We also recommend your own travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
