Maasai Village Cultural Day Trip
A private day trip from Arusha to a Maasai village on the plains, where a local guide introduces you to the family, explains how a boma works and walks with you and the herders, followed by lunch.
Cattle, Beadwork and Life on the Plains
Many Maasai families around Arusha still keep cattle, goats and sheep on the open plains, living in a boma: a ring of houses built by the women from poles, mud and cow dung, around a central enclosure where the animals sleep at night, protected by a thorn fence. Cattle are at the heart of life, as food, wealth and a part of every important ceremony.
With a guide from the community you visit a home, hear how families divide the work, see women making the bright beadwork the Maasai are known for, and walk out with the herders. Villages that welcome visitors often greet them with a song, and young men may show the well-known jumping dance. Part of the visit fee goes to the community, and you can buy beadwork directly from the women who made it.
