3-Day Mount Meru Climb

Arusha's Mountain in a Long Weekend
From$925 pp
Socialist Peak, 4,566 m
Buffalo and Giraffes on the Lower Slopes
Summit and Down in One Day
Start/End: Arusha·5 Days / 4 Nights·Huts·Private Climb

A private 3-day climb of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest mountain, sleeping two nights in huts, with two hotel nights in Arusha, 5 days in total.

Mount Meru, the Faster Way

The climb follows the same path as our 4-day version: from Momella Gate through the park's grassland and forest to Miriakamba Hut, up to Saddle Hut with an afternoon walk to Little Meru, and a night start for the narrow ridge to Socialist Peak. The difference is the last day: after the summit you walk all the way down to Momella Gate instead of sleeping again at Miriakamba.

That makes the final day long, with a big descent on tired legs. The 3-day climb suits fit hikers with little time, and Kilimanjaro climbers who want a quick acclimatisation climb shortly before their main trip. If you would rather enjoy the descent and the wildlife on the lower slopes at an easier pace, choose the 4-day climb.

Questions Climbers Ask

3 or 4 days on Mount Meru?

The route is the same. On 3 days you walk from the summit all the way down to the gate, about 3,000 metres of descent in one day. On 4 days you sleep at Miriakamba after the summit and walk out the next morning. Choose 4 days for a more relaxed climb.

Why is there an armed ranger?

The lower slopes are in Arusha National Park, where buffalo and other large animals live. A park ranger walks with every group for safety; it is a park rule.

Is Mount Meru a good warm-up for Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Many climbers do Meru a few days before Kilimanjaro to help their body adjust to altitude. Ask us to plan both together, with a rest day in between.

How difficult is the summit ridge?

The final ridge is narrow and exposed in places, with steep drops beside the path, but no ropes or climbing skills are needed. Your guide sets a careful pace in the dark.

When is the best time to climb?

The drier months, roughly June to October and late December to February, are the best. April and May are the wettest.
