Start/End: Moshi·3 Days / 2 Nights·Simple Guesthouses·Private Hike

A private 3-day hike in the West Usambara Mountains, starting and ending in Moshi: the hill town of Lushoto, the Irente viewpoint over the plains, walks through farming villages with a local guide, and the Mtae viewpoint at the edge of the range.

A Walking Break Away from the Parks

The Usambaras are cool, green mountains in north-eastern Tanzania, covered in small farms, forest patches and villages of the Sambaa people. Paths link the villages, and from the edges of the range you look straight down onto the plains far below.

This is a gentle hike rather than a climb: walks of a few hours a day on village paths, with a local guide who knows the families and farms along the way. It is a good change of pace after a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb. The nights are in simple guesthouses or small lodges, chosen for location rather than luxury.

  • Village paths, small farms and forest patches

Questions Travellers Ask

How hard are the walks?

Moderate: a few hours a day on village paths with some steep sections. You need no climbing experience, but good walking shoes and normal fitness.

What are the guesthouses like?

Simple and clean, chosen for their location in the mountains. Please do not expect safari-lodge comfort.

When is the best time?

The dry months, roughly June to October and December to February. Paths can be muddy in the rains.

Can we combine it with Mkomazi?

Yes. Mkomazi lies on the road towards Lushoto, so our 2-day Mkomazi safari fits well before or after. Ask us.
